About Your Pet’s Wellness Exam
Your pet’s preventative care plan starts with a wellness exam. Pets at every stage of life need regular wellness exams to make sure they’re healthy. Because dogs and cats age faster than we do, regular exams are needed to evaluate their ongoing health so we can detect, diagnose, and treat health issues during the early stages. Early detection is one of the keys to maintaining good health, and annual or bi-annual pet wellness exams allow us to evaluate any changes that might indicate an emerging problem.
We recommend that most pets have an exam at least once per year, but older pets will likely need to see our vets every six months.
If we detect anything out of the ordinary during your pet’s exam, we’ll either discuss treatment or recommend advanced diagnostics (X-rays, blood work, etc.). It’s important to keep in mind that the exam alone is just the first step in prevention. We offer several other preventative wellness services—some of which can be performed at the same time as the wellness exam—to keep your pet healthy. These services include:
Pet Vaccinations: Vaccines protect pets against certain serious and potentially-fatal viruses and diseases. This is why we recommend that all pets be vaccinated on a regular basis as part of their preventative care regimen. Typically, vaccines are updated every 1-3 years, at the same time as the wellness exams. For more information, visit our vaccinations page.
Parasite Prevention: All cats and dogs, including those that are primarily indoor pets, need to receive year-round protection against disease-carrying parasites. We offer several different flea, tick, and heartworm prevention products here in-house and can discuss our recommendations during the wellness visits.
